A company called Shapeways has announced a line of prints that include portraits of celebrities and athletes including Michael Jordan, Beyonce and Michael Phelps.
The company says it is aiming to have all its prints ready in two weeks, with a limited number to be shipped by courier, and hopes to have an initial production run of 50,000 available by Christmas.
Shapeways says the first prints will be limited to a few dozen each.
It is an unusual move for a printing company, which has struggled to catch on with consumers.
Its main competitors are the 3D printing service 3DPrinting, and the company’s online store sells printed objects for $49.99.
“People have been interested in 3D printers for some time, and it has certainly proven to be a valuable tool for people looking to create beautiful objects in a digital environment,” said Shapeways chief executive John J. Osterholm.
“With Shapeways, we’re delivering on our promise to empower people to create amazing art, with 3D printed objects.”
Shapories founder and CEO John Ostermal’s first print of a person, a portrait, was a popular product in the online store.
Shaheen O’Brien, an analyst at Forrester Research, said the move will likely spur demand for printed objects and that Shapeways could eventually be the company that drives the growth of the 3DP printing market.
“It’s going to be really interesting to see how Shapeways can help drive the overall 3D print industry growth, given that Shapys current focus is on the apparel space,” she said.
“I think this is the beginning of a long journey for Shapeways.”
The company has been in business for more than three years and it is still making small batches of the prints, which are being sold by third-party vendors.
Shaps first print in December was of a man named Muhammad Ali.
O’Reilly Media, a media company owned by the Walt Disney Co, had bought the rights to the prints in 2014 for $20 million.
Shanghais print is a limited edition of 1,000 prints.
The prints will go on sale at $299.99 and include prints of athletes like Jordan and Phelps, who were among the first people to appear on a 3-D print of Muhammad Ali’s face.
Shas is currently printing a limited series of prints for the film “American Hustle,” which stars Will Smith and Anne Hathaway.
Shawn Howard, the companys co-founder, said he is “excited” about the project.
“We want to help people get involved and share their creativity, and I think that is something that will help build a community around 3D,” he said.
Shafaa Abdul-Hakim, who is also CEO of the company, said it will be an “interesting journey.”
“I’m excited to see what it’s going with, because 3D has a lot of potential and I am really looking forward to learning about it,” she told Reuters.
“If it does work, we will have a number of 3D prints that will be available for people to print and sell.
We will have some of them in stock in a very short period of time.”
Shafaqs latest prints are the first to include a human face.
The line of 3DP prints is a sign of Shapeways’ focus on design and the ability to create objects with 3-dimensional shapes.
The company is also trying to turn the printed object into a product.
“What we’re really going to do is turn the design into a 3DP print,” Osterholt said.
The prints are being produced in three-dimensional printing.
The Shapeways website said they are produced in a new way that uses the company 3D scanning technology.
Shaceways also has a number to offer the consumer.
The printed objects are not limited to the price of the item, but instead include a $99 discount.
The first prints have already been shipped to customers in the United States.
Osterholm said that Shapsters initial run will have 100,000 printed, but he said that is likely to increase as it moves to more orders.
Osters plans to launch a larger scale production in 2019, with more than 1,600 printed objects.
“Our goal is to make an initial run of 5,000 pieces in 2019.
We’ve already started to get orders from people in other parts of the world,” he told Reuters in an interview.”
But there are still a lot more pieces that we can get into production.”
Shacos plans to add more print options in the coming months.
